… write a monologue about what “pandemic” means to each of them. There were no conceptual boundaries, only that each piece present an unvarnished truth of his or her contemporary reality. The intent was to make an experimental short film that traded upon filmic and theatrical conventions.
Because these students were unable to participate in the most common of human rituals, coming together at the movies or theatre, where performer and spectator share a space, we decided to film in our empty theatre since public performances were prohibited. As such, the dramatic principles of film and theatre were utilized to create a dimension of scale and intimacy, while musing: In the absence of performer or spectator, can there be a shared human experience?
Pandemic is a series of vignettes of intensely affecting and raw performances that explore abandonment, death, racial, gender inequalities, the toxicity of social media, and the loss of identity in a world more connected than ever, but, ironically, incredibly isolated.
We hope you enjoy our film.
Peace
