Gestation

My twin daughters’ birth came after enduring the emotional and psychological pain of six miscarriages; all twins (three girls and three boys). Because each miscarriage was punctuated with the loss of the fetus’ heartbeat, the sound of the heartbeat came to symbolize both life and death and tremendous emotional anxiety throughout the pregnancy.

The concept of this short piece draws inspiration from Chris Marker’s 1963 film, La Jetée, by combining still imagery with the sound of a recording of my daughters’ heartbeats. The final sequence was shot on a LomoKino 35mm camera.
